Joseph Oliver “Sonny” Mock, age 83, resident of Columbus, died on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at Columbus Hospice. Funeral services are schedule at the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby, Columbus on Thursday, September 12, 2013, 3 p.m. with Reverend Tim Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. Mr. Mock, son of the late Ollie Anderson Mock and Annie McGuffin Mock, was born January 19, 1930 in Augusta, Georgia. He graduated from Mountain Hill School, Hamilton, Georgia. After high school, he served honorably in the U.S. Navy, serving on an aircraft carrier during the Korean Conflict. After serving his country, Mr. Mock began a career in the railroad industry and retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad where he worked for over 40 years. He was a former member of Fairview Baptist Church where he was a deacon and served for over 44 years. He is a current member of Britt David Baptist Church. Mr. Mock enjoyed hunting, fishing, and “piddling.” He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Haywood Martin. Mr. Mock is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rita Ann Mock of Columbus; “his girls,” Pam Golden and her husband Dennis of Marietta, Georgia, Debbie Josey and her husband David of Columbus, and Trina Mock of Columbus; one sister, Dorothy “Dot” Martin of Bainbridge, Georgia; five grandchildren, Shayne Golden of Freeport, Florida, Kelly Booker and her husband Jeremy of Marietta, Georgia, Mandy Revell and her husband Carson of Columbus, Ashley Josey and Cassidy Josey, both of Columbus; two great-grandchildren, Grayson Booker of Marietta, Georgia and Crosby Revell of Columbus; two nieces; one nephew; other relatives and friends.
