John Allen Welch, 95 of Columbus, Georgia died Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Columbus Hospice House. Funeral services are scheduled at the Edgewood Hall, Striffler-Hamby, Columbus on Saturday, November 23, 2013, 1 p.m. with Reverend Donnie Cook officiating. Interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, November 22, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. Mr. Welch, son of the late Edward Allen and Mary Welch, was born September 23, 1918 in Phenix City, Alabama. He was retired as Chief Inspector, Automotive Division, Fort Benning, Georgia. After retirement from civil service, he opened The Framing Place in Columbus. His greatest joys in life were his faith, his family, and any project that required him to be outdoors and working with his hands. Mr. Welch was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Reid and May Dean Christopher; and two brothers, James C. Welch and Edward Allen Welch, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Annie Loy Welch of Columbus; two daughters, Elizabeth Johnston and her husband Bobby of Columbus and Barbara Gibson and her husband David of Clinton, Mississippi; two grandsons, Jayson Johnston and his wife Laura of Hamilton, Georgia and John Gibson and his wife Lauren of Atlanta, Georgia; one great-grandson, Raylan Johnston of Hamilton, Georgia; other relatives and friends.
