Johanna Maria Meier Smith, age 97, of Columbus, Georgia passed away on Sunday December 9, 2018. Johanna was born December 15, 1920 in Holzhausen, Germany to Maria Mueller and Josef Meier.

Johanna grew up in WWII Germany and emigrated to the United States after the war. She worked for the city of Memphis for many years, buying a house in Memphis and raising German Shepherds. Johanna married the love of her life, Leonard Smith, a retired Air Force pilot, and they moved to Columbus. She will always be remembered for her volunteer work with the Medical Center Auxiliary for over 30 years, her love of her German heritage, her adopted home and American citizenship.

Johanna was preceded in death by her husband Leonard Smith; father Josef Meier and mother Maria Mueller Meier; brother Josef Meier; and sister Charlotte Meier Hantel. Services will be private.
