A 1952 graduate of Griffin High School, she attended Marjorie Webster Junior College and the University of Georgia. While at UGA, Jan met her future husband, Sam Buracker. She was a
member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and a Sigma Alpha Epsilon sweetheart. Jan and Sam married on November 23, 1957 and promptly moved to La Jolla, California where Sam was stationed with the Marine Corps. Their first child, Duke, arrived the following October. Jan and Sam returned to Georgia and settled in Columbus where Bolling and Sam III were born. Jan was a sustaining member of The Junior League, a member of Colonial Dames, and voted “Best Dressed” of Columbus on many occasions.
Jan loved entertaining, laughing with her hunting clan, and gardening with her dear friend, Taylor. She combined her love of travel with a love of antiques and decorating, often purchasing pieces on her trips to send back to That Added Touch, the decorating business she and Sally Wilder ran for 30 years. Jan’s love for her country home in Ellerslie, Ga., her beloved grandfather’s hometown of Fort Valley, Ga., and peaches never waned.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her beloved husband, Samuel Lewis Buracker, Jr.; her sisters Geneve Campbell Piper, Jerry Lynn Campbell and Ann Campbell Brannon; and outlaw son-in-law David Andrew Cartledge.
Jan is survived by daughter, Duke Buracker Cartledge; daughter, Bolling Dismuke Buracker; son, Samuel Lewis Buracker, III (Sherrie); grandchildren Katherine Schley Buracker, Samuel Lewis Buracker, IV, Andrew Cosby Cartledge (Ashley), Campbell Cartledge Bleke (Michael) and David Andrew Cartledge; great grandchildren Sally, Emma Duke, Bo, Asher and George as well as several cousins and many friends.
