Services will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Edgewood Hall, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, Georgia 31907, with J. W. Norman of Berean Covenant Church officiating. After the service, a private committal with full military honors will be held in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:00 AM Saturday morning at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary.
Colonel Johnson was born on September 27, 1928 in Americus, Georgia to the late Colonel and Mrs. Albert S. Johnson. He was a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology. He enlisted into the United States Army in January 1951. He graduated from the Infantry Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia; the Signal Officers' Basic Course at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey; the Armored Officers' Advanced Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky; and the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. During the Korean War, he served with the 14th Infantry Regiment of the 25th Division as a Platoon Leader. During the Vietnam War, he served as the Signal Officer of the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division. He was a member of Berean Covenant Church, where he served as an Elder.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; his daughter, Ann Curry; three grandchildren, Erica Curry, Ryan Curry, and Tyler Curry; and his two infant sisters, Alberta Johnson and Juanita Johnson.
He is survived by his son, Michael Johnson (Judith); two daughters, Elaine Johnson and Joyce Gibson; sister, Bonnita Richmond (Kenneth); six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
