Columbus, Georgia- James "Jim" G. Varney, age 79, resident of Columbus, died on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at Columbus Hospice House. Funeral services are scheduled at the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus on Saturday, May 11, 2013, 1 p.m. with Reverend Norman Drummond officiating. Interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service on Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 11 a.m. till 1 p.m.
Mr. Varney, son of the late Charlie Varney and Elizabeth Jane Curry Varney, was born June 10, 1933 in Matewan, West Virginia. He graduated from Belfry High School, Belfry, Kentucky in 1951. After high school, he attended and studied at Perdue University. He retired as a quality control engineer for Kysor Warren Corp.
Mr. Varney was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Lynn Varney; two sisters; and one brother. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Josephine "Jo" O. Varney of Columbus; one daughter, Peggie Stoneking and her husband Ken of Lawrenceville, Georgia; one son, Greg Varney of Columbus; one brother, Glen Varney and his wife Nita of Elkhart, Indiana; two grandchildren, Rebekah Jo Stoneking and Andrew William Stoneking, both of Lawrenceville, Georgia; nieces; nephews; aunts; uncles; other relatives and friends.
