James Andrew Elkins, Jr., 75, of Columbus, Georgia passed away peacefully in his sleep at Canterbury Healthcare in Phenix City on Wednesday, April 1st. Jim was born on January 24, 1940 in Little Rock, Arkansas, the son of James Andrew and Dorris O’Neal Elkins.
Jim grew up in Columbus, Georgia, graduated from Darlington School in Rome, Georgia in 1959, graduated from Sewanee University in 1962, and earned his law degree (J.D.) from the University of Georgia in 1965.
Jim practiced law in Columbus, Georgia for over 40 years and was a founding member of St. George’s Anglican Church where he served as a Lay Reader and also as Chancellor (legal advisor).
Jim was predeceased by his parents and by his wife of 43 years, the late Martha Lee Allen, a native of Latta, South Carolina.
Jim is survived by his brother, Robert N. Elkins, of Athens, GA. Additional survivors are two sons, James Andrew Elkins, III (Sue) of Providence, Rhode Island and Germany, Allen Lee Elkins (Kelly) of Remlap, Alabama, and a daughter, Martha Lee Elkins of Columbus. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Riley Elkins, Broden Elkins, and Zoe Elkins.
Services will be at St. George's Anglican Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7. Interment will be at the Catfish Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Latta, South Carolina.
