James Wilmer Davis Jr., age 72, of Columbus, Georgia passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2019. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at 12:30 pm, at Striffler – Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, in Edgewood Hall. A visitation will be held on Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 pm, and prior to services on Tuesday from 11:30 am until 12:25 pm.
James was born August 4, 1947, in Opp, Alabama; the son of the late James Wilmer Davis Sr. and Nellie Pearl Reece Davis. He and his family later moved to Columbus where he met the love of his life, Gloria Jean Birge. They were married on June 25, 1966. Just a few months later, in August of 1966, James went into the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War. Once home, their family began to grow. James was a talented carpenter and worked as a subcontractor for Daniel Appliance for over 30 years, until his retirement due to Alzheimer’s in 2010. He was a member at Pierce Chapel in Phenix City.
James was a very humble, hardworking, and loving man who sacrificed for others. James firmly believed in being Christ-like and led by example, by serving others, loving unconditionally, and respecting everyone. He truly thought that we could all “Talk Less and Do More” and that “being yourself” was a good thing. He enjoyed good music, his dogs, hot rod cars, flying airplanes and spending time in the mountains of Tennessee. His friend of 63 years, Wendell Stevens meant the world to him; he couldn’t ask for a better friend. However, what he truly loved was his wife, children and grandchildren. He cherished the time spent and memories made with them, and there was no greater joy than being a husband, father, Papa, friend and being part of a loving family.
James is preceded in death by his parents Wilmer and Nell; and his best friend Wendell.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria; two daughters, Lisa Cypert, Jennifer (Adam) Churchwell; two sons, Chris (Lisa) Davis, Jason (Nichole) Davis; Grandchildren, Mikayla and Garrett Cypert, Noah, Nina and Emma Churchwell, Cody and Sophia Pacheco, Grayson and Scarlett Davis, Tyler, Maggie and Harbor Davis; sister, Ann Blount and many nieces, nephews, and family friends who will cherish his memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send your donations to the Alzheimer's Association in his memory. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.shcolumbus.com for the Davis family.
