James Herman Baxley, age 76, resident of Columbus, died on Friday, March 23, 2012 at his residence. Funeral services are scheduled at Fairview Baptist Church, 2913 Reese Road, Columbus on Monday, March 26, 2012, 2 pm with Reverend Jimbo Albrecht officiating according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus. Interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, March 25, 2012 from 3 to 5 p.m.
Mr. Baxley, son of the late Riley Pitt Baxley and Velma Lizabeth Fuller Baxley, was born January 4, 1936 in Phenix City, AL. Mr. Baxley served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korea Era Conflict. He then worked and later retired with over 32 years in civil service at Fort Benning. After his retirement, he began another career at St. Francis Hospital where he faithfully worked for 15 years. Mr. Baxley was a member for over 29 years at the Mt. Hermon Masonic Lodge #304 F&AM; member of the Royal Order of Amaranth, Midland Court #20; and also a member of the Scottish Rite of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Ann Hopper Baxley and his second wife, Zelma Mae Brown Baxley; eight siblings.
Mr. Baxley is survived by two daughters, Kimberly Dyann Baxley Wilson of Columbus and Karen Denise Baxley and her husband Adam Pritchard of Lexington, KY; one brother, Riley Baxley, Jr of Hartford, AL; three granddaughters, Kevan Danae Baxley, Kirin DeLizabeth Wilson, and Charlie Baxley Pritchard; two grandsons, James Daren Wilson and Justin Dallas Wilson; two step-daughters, Rhonda Harris and her husband Steve and Paula Flathmann and her husband Perry; one step-son, Terrell Wadkins and his wife Teresa; five step-grandchildren, Christina and Holly Harris, Maddie Flathmann, Jacob Wadkins, and Daniel Wadkins and his wife Jaimie; great-step-granddaughter, Macy Wadkins; other relatives and friends.
