George B. Skipworth, M.D., age 87, resident of Columbus, died on Wednesday, August 13, 2014. Funeral services are scheduled at The First Baptist Church of Columbus at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 with Dr. Jimmy Elder and Dr. Kevin Calhoun officiating. Interment to follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Striffler-Hamby, Columbus on Monday, August 18, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Dr. Skipworth, son of the late William Buford Skipworth Sr. and Velma Lanford Skipworth, was born January 31, 1927 in Columbus, Georgia. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1945 and continued his military career in the U.S. Army Medical Corps where he later retired as Colonel in 1974. Dr. Skipworth attended the University of Georgia, and received his Medical Degree from Duke University School of Medicine in 1954. He specialized in Dermatology where he served as Chief of Dermatology Service at many Army Medical Centers across the country during his time of service, to include: Martin Army Hospital in Fort Benning, GA., Tripler Army Medical Center in Oahu, HI., Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX., and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. Dr. Skipworth was a member of many professional societies, co-author of many dermatological publications as well as Clinical Associate Professor at many universities. His greatest joy, besides his family, was serving the people of Belize for 30 years with Tejas Missions.
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Eileen Park Skipworth. Dr. Skipworth is survived by his son, William Stewart Skipworth (Deborah) of Columbus; daughter, Heather Skipworth Craven of Seattle, WA.; four grandchildren, Eliza Ellen Craven, Sarah Margaret Craven, Christian George Craven, Hannah Marleen Skipworth; and many nieces and nephews.
