Frances Irwin Olive died Saturday, May 20, 2017 surrounded by her family. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, 11 a.m. at Porter Chapel, First Baptist Church of Columbus with Dr. Jimmy Elder officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall before the service at 10:00 a.m.
Mrs. Olive was born November 20, 1924 in Volusia County, Florida. She was the daughter of John Richard Irwin, Jr. and Ella Rebecca Colley Irwin and the sister of John Richard Irwin, III and William Warthen Irwin.
Mrs. Olive graduated from Albany High School, Albany, GA, in 1941; North Georgia College, Dahlonega, GA, in 1943; and Emory University School of Nursing in 1946. In 1949, she graduated from George Peabody College (now a part of Vanderbilt University) with a degree in public health nursing. She worked as a public health nurse in Moultrie, Albany, and Columbus, and was a school nurse in the Fort Benning schools for 19 years.
Mrs. Olive was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbus and the Joy Sunday School Class.
She married Dixon Raines Olive, Jr. in 1951. They had three sons, Steve (Mary) Olive, Dixon (Bonnie) Olive III, and John (Peggy) Olive; a daughter, Mary Rebecca Hercules. She was the proud grandmother of Frances (Jon) Holcomb, Anna (Tyler) Johnson, Meg (Susie) Olive-Allison, John Richard (Maggie) Olive, and Olivia Hercules. She also took great pride in her six great-grandchildren, Leah and Hannah Holcomb, Ella Beck and Jane Claire Johnson, Sam Olive-Allison, and Julep Olive, and was a loving aunt to 13 nieces and nephews.
It was Mrs. Olive’s desire that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a favorite charity.
