Mrs. Hurtt was born the ninth of twelve children on April 30, 1911 in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Charles Hayes McGlaun and Lula Clyde Bagley McGlaun. She graduated from Richland High School in 1928 and moved to Front Avenue in Columbus to live in the now historic Bagley home where she resided while attending Clarabelle Smith Business School. Her great-grandfather, William Bagley, had been a pioneer in Muscogee County. After arriving in 1827, he helped clear the land for Broad Street and dug the first well in Columbus. His family lived in Muscogee County until Chattahoochee County was created from Muscogee County in 1854. Fornie’s grandfather, David Gaskin McGlaun, arrived in the area in 1828 and served with William Bagley as two of the first commissioners of Chattahoochee County. At the age of 17, Fornie McGlaun represented Chattahoochee County as a maiden on their float in the Columbus Centennial Parade in 1928. She married Arthur William (Bill) Hurtt on December 24, 1933. At the time of her marriage, she worked as a bookkeeper at Rosenberg Jewelers in downtown Columbus. Mrs. Hurtt was employed by several judges at the Muscogee County Courthouse before opening her own business, Hurtt Department Store on Talbotton Road. She operated her store for over thirty years before closing it in 1987. After her retirement, Fornie traveled extensively in Europe, Israel and North America. At the age of 95, Mrs. Hurtt moved to Spring Harbor where she was a friend to everyone and was loved by the staff and residents.
Fornie Hurtt was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and was previously a longtime member of Rose Hill United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the George Walton Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution; the Lizzie Rutherford Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy; and an Emeritus member of Columbus Chapter #261 Order of Eastern Star.
