Emily was born in Columbus, Georgia on October 25, 1980, the daughter of Virginia Swann Sargent and William John Sargent, of birth by Edward Charles Lunsford Jr. Emily traveled throughout her early life due to her father’s military career and settled in Columbus where her extended family resides.
Emily received various academic honors throughout her educational career and graduated from Columbus State University with a Bachelors and Master’s Degree in Psychology. Emily married Tim Hess and has two sons, Lazarus and Locke Hess, and lived in Waverly Hall, Georgia.
From an early age, Emily had natural wit and charm that was exceptionally unique, which drew others close to her. She was a talented musician and played as first violinist in school orchestra as well as the piano where she initially played by ear and continued to play throughout her life. Emily was an authentic deep thinker and poured her soul in pen to paper, receiving many accolades from writing organizations on her creative writing abilities.
Emily also formed close bonds with animals, from house pets to wild animals. There was not an animal that she would turn away if hurt or needed care. Her love of animals extended specifically to dogs and horses. Throughout her life, she had many special dogs in which she formed irreplaceable connections. With horses, Emily was a talented equestrian, competing in English style riding.
Emily exhibited tremendous strength and determination throughout her life in overcoming several obstacles that would seem unbearable to many. The way she persevered in the midst of turbulent times motivated and encouraged her loved ones. She was truly an inspiration to those who knew her.
Above all her talents and achievements, she was an extraordinarily devoted mother to Lazarus and Locke. In this role, she truly shined. The loves of her life were her two sons, they were her world.
She is preceded in death by her Grandparents, Charles and Charlotte Swann; John and Elizabeth Sargent; and, Edward and Dorothy Lunsford.
