Mrs. Hassell, daughter of the late Rev. William Manning Cox and Fannie May Duskin Cox, was born March 31, 1915 in Evergreen, Alabama. Elizabeth lived in DeFuniak Springs, Florida, for many years with her parents and her sister, Frances. Elizabeth and her beloved husband, Joe, met in DeFuniak Springs. They were “childhood sweethearts” and shared the same March 31st birthday. At the time of Joe’s passing in January 2006, the two had been married 66 years.
Elizabeth graduated from both Andrew College and Huntingdon College. After she and Joe married in 1939, they lived in Atlanta, Georgia, and in Hickory, North Carolina, before settling in Columbus, Georgia. In 1957, they joined St. Luke Methodist Church, and the Shaw Sunday School Class, where Elizabeth and Joe worked with Meals on Wheels for a number of years. Elizabeth also was a member of Circle Six at the church. The family thanks members of Circle Six for the continuing supportive cards they sent to Elizabeth after she moved to Atlanta.
Mrs. Hassell is pre-deceased by her husband, Joseph E. Hassell, of Columbus, Georgia; her sister, Frances M. Cox, of Atlanta, Georgia; her son, Rev. Joe Hassell, of Thomaston, Georgia; and her grandson-in-law, Joey Maddox, of Hamilton, Georgia.
