Edna Ann Spencer went to be with the Lord on February 5, 2022, surrounded by loved ones. Ann was born on November 11, 1931 in New Bern, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mae Denny Spencer and Richard Wells Spencer, as well as her sister, Denny Wells Spencer.
Ann retired from the Fort Benning school system in July 1999 after working for the system for 45 years and one month (including one year at DOD schools in Germany). When she retired, she was the school counselor at Wilson School. A long time member of Saint Luke United Methodist Church, Ann was also a member of Benning Education Association, National Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Columbus Museum, Trees Columbus, and the Smithsonian Institute. She also served as president of Phi Delta Kappa. Ann was an ardent lover of all animals and was a member of Paws Humane, Defenders of Wildlife, National Park Association, American Humane Society, ASPCA, and many others.
Ann received her BS from Florida State University, majoring in Art and Elementary Education. She was a member of the Phi Mu sorority; the FSU Flying Circus, performing often at Callaway Gardens; and the Tarpon Club--the FSU synchronized swimming club. After graduating from FSU, Ann went on to get her masters degree in counseling and psychological services from GA Tech.
Ann traveled the globe--to Europe, China, Bermuda, the Caribbean, Scandinavia, and Mexico. She was very proud of having visited every state except for Michigan and North and South Dakota. (It is their loss!) She commemorated these trips through her photography and extensive scrap booking; she was also an excellent artist and calligrapher. A huge Braves fan, she did not miss a televised game and often traveled to Atlanta to watch them play in person.
Her dear friends will forever miss her wonderful sense of humor, her devotion to and love of her friends, and her positive outlook on life in good times and bad. She is survived by two loving goddaughters, Ms. Ann Morris of Marietta, GA and Minneapolis, MN and Mrs. Karen Sams (Bob) of Pensacola Beach, FL.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary on Friday, February 11, 2022 at 2PM, led by Rev. Dick Reese of Saint Luke Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior in the Mill Room. Because of continued Covid-19 protocols, we ask that those attending the service please wear a mask.
Memorial donations may be made to Paws Humane or a charity of one's choice.
