Dr. Edgar Bridges Horn, age 91 , of Columbus, died Friday, December 23, 2011, at Spring Harbor Retirement Community. A graveside funeral service will be held 11:30 A.M. Saturday, December 24, 2011, in Parkhill Cemetery with the Reverend Charles R. Hasty, Jr. officiating according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus. Dr. Horn was born July 29, 1920 in Sebastopol, MS the son of C.L. Horn and Mary Theresa Bridges Horn. Dr. Horn grew up in Magee, MS and earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Millsaps College where he was a member and officer of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was also a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta and Theta Nu Epsilon fraternities. Dr. Horn graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School. He served as a Major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was stationed at Ft. Benning where he completed paratrooper school. Dr. Horn was married to Sheila Wingfield Averett in 1947. After completing his military service, he began his practice of General Surgery in Columbus where he practiced for 38 years before retiring. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Horn was the Director of Medical Education at the Medical Center, where he headed up the intern program for 11 years; he served as a past Chief of Staff at the Medical Center and was a past President of the Muscogee County Medical Society. He was involved in many civic and social activities to include, past President of the Board of Junior Achievement and past President of the Bachelors Club, a Board Member of Sally Little League Baseball, the Country Club of Columbus, the Green Island Club, the Big Eddy Club, and the Rotary Club of Columbus. Dr. Horn was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years and a brother, Dr. Carl L. Horn, Jr. He is survived by a daughter, Sheila Horn Kiggins, and her husband Dr. Christopher Michael Kiggins, of Columbus; a son, Edgar B. Horn, Jr. of Winston-Salem, NC; 5 grandchildren, Matthew Hill Kiggins, Tyler Bridges Kiggins, Wesley Fowler Kiggins, Aurie Ashton Horn, and Edgar Bridges Horn, III; a sister-in-law, Katherine Averett Kimbrough, and several nieces and nephews. The family is very grateful to his devoted housekeeper, Lucile Adams, and his devoted care givers from Comfort Keepers and Columbus Hospice.
