Dorothy Ruth Allen, 84, died Sunday, August 8th, at her home on Pierce Chapel Road surrounded by family. Dorothy was born on November 8, 1925 in Columbus, Georgia to Odessa and Willie Robert “Buster” Jernigan.
Dorothy married the late J.W. Allen in 1942. She was an active member of Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She worked as a bookkeeper for Archer Mill and Thorne Dental Labs. She was also employed at Tiny Tots.
Dorothy served as President of the PTA at Midland Elementary for both daughters, and was a member of the American Legion and Moose Club with her husband, J.W. Dorothy enjoyed being with family, attending Sunday School, visiting with friends, going to the River, reading, dancing, shopping, cooking and dark chocolate. She was a best friend to her daughters, and was a sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother!
Dorothy is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Jackie and Marvin Anthony of Monrovia, Maryland and Cindy and Steve Keller of Midland, Georgia. In addition, Dorothy is survived by 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren to include: Randy and Amy Watson and children Kyle and Kaleb of Pine Mountain, Georgia; Allison and Jim Willis of Savannah, Georgia; Leslie and Mike Mangold and children Colin and Cameron of Annapolis, Maryland; Brooke Anthony and children Rachael, Emily and Griffin of Mt. Airy, Maryland; and Carrie and Ryan Hines and children Avery, Macy, Josey and Anthony of Mt. Airy, Maryland.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at Striffler-Hamby Funeral Home, Columbus, Georgia from 6-8 PM. A private burial will be held for family members.
A Celebration of Her Life will be held Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at 1pm at Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church, Midland, Georgia. Our family wishes to thank the many friends with whom have shared their laughter, companionship and prayers with Dorothy over the years. Contributions in her honor may be made to Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church.
