Don was born in and resided in Hatchechubbee his entire life – the son of B.L. and Lillie Terrell Dixon. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. A committed follower of Jesus Christ and a member of Seale Baptist Church, he served many years as a deacon and had other leadership roles in the church. One of his primary joys in life was that his children and grandchildren followed in his Christian faith.
As an avid bird dog trainer, he owned and operated Dixieland Plantation for almost 60 years, during which time he trained and ran many dogs on the major Field Trial circuit and on 2 occasions, won the National Shooting Dog Championship in Union Springs, AL with a dog named Pop A Top. Over his career, Don also won multiple other field trial competitions. In 1990, he opened Dixieland Lodge and hunting preserve, which provided many years of hunting enjoyment for people from all over the world.
Don was one of the founding members of the Hatchechubbee Voluntary Fire Department. He served as firefighter, board member and chairman of the board. In 2002, Don was honored as the firefighter of the year for his service of over 25 years to the department.
Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, May Belle Fisher Dixon; his four sons – Don Dixon, Jr (Diane), Beau Dixon (Pam Bowne), Art Dixon (Mandy) and Hank Dixon (Kish); five grandchildren – Kori, Bailee, Madison, Rachel and Gabe Dixon; one great-grandchild – Royce Jackson; one sister – Jenny Smith (Nathan); several nieces, nephews and extended family.
A private family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Samaritan’s Purse in Don’s name.
