A visitation of family and friends will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2020, from 2:00 pm until 2:55 pm at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 pm. Burial will take place in Parkhill Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
Darrell was born in Yakima, Washington on November 14, 1934 the son of Vesta Spall and Clarence Taylor. He grew up in Greeley, Colorado where he graduated from Greeley High School in 1952.
Darrell joined the U.S. Army and spent 24 years as a soldier. He successfully completed Ranger School and served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam. In 1967, he was severely wounded while defending his position against a night attack on his Battalion. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (2 Campaigns), Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Combat Infantryman Badge, Silver Star, Vietnam Civil Actions Medal, Valorous Unit Award, and the Purple Heart Medal.
Darrell married his wife, Joy, in February of 1970. Together they raised their four children and settled in Columbus, Georgia. They have been members of Saint Peter United Methodist Church for 20 years, where Darrell taught the adult Sunday School Class. He was involved in numerous charitable activities. He helped to feed the elderly with Meals on Wheels, volunteered for Feeding the Homeless at Rosehill, and Feeding the Valley. The Taylors, together, helped care for children of friends and family throughout their retirement years and have many extended families due to their love and generous hearts.
Darrell is survived by his wife, Joy; daughters, Felicia Taylor and Dianne Parker; son, Wayne Cayce and wife Judie; son, Steven Cayce and wife Monica; sisters, Shirley Rein and Beverly Pope; grandchildren, Eric Cayce and wife Connie, Elizabeth Singletary and husband Justin, Haylie Bogan and Devon Bogan, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in passing by his mother Vesta; son-in-law, Dewey Parker; and grandson, Steven Parker.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to Saint Peter United Methodist Church building fund would be preferred.
