Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 11:00 AM in Porter Chapel of First Baptist Church with Dr. Jimmy Elder officiating. A private interment will be at Parkhill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening at Striffler-Hamby from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 828 Columbus, Georgia 31902 or to your favorite charity.
Mr. Fountain was born February 26, 1923 in Columbus, Georgia. He was a graduate of Columbus High School in 1941. Mr. Fountain served his country faithfully for five years in the United States Navy, and later graduated from the University of Georgia in 1950. He was a member of the Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity. Mr. Fountain served three years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Special Agent before returning to Columbus, Georgia to enter the accounting profession with his late father-in-law. He later founded Fountain, Arrington, Bass, Mercer & Lee, P.C., Certified Public Accountants, from which firm he retired in 1993. Mr. Fountain was a member of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants at the time of his death. Mr. Fountain was a former member of the Kiwanis Club and the Downtown Rotary Club. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Country Club of Columbus, Green Island Country Club and the Big Eddy Club. Mr. Fountain was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbus, Georgia and the Grace Sunday School Class.
Mr. Fountain was preceded in death by his parents, Jewel and George Fountain, his first wife, Polly Ladshaw, and his second wife, Helen Mercer. He is survived by his wife, Mellie Fountain, daughters, Terri Jo Jones and her husband, Marion and Donna Dee Fountain all of Columbus, Georgia; his son, David Fountain and his wife, Lori, of Alpine, California. Survivors also include James W. Griffin and his wife, Fern, of Pine Mountain, Georgia, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
