Bessie Claire Cook, 93, of Columbus, GA, passed away peacefully January 7, 2017 in the loving care of Columbus Hospice. The family will welcome guests for a Celebration of Bessie’s Home-Going Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 11:00 am in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Funeral Home, 4071 Macon Rd., Columbus, GA, followed by a reception in the Mill Room of Striffler-Hamby. The Reverend Michael McBride will officiate.
Mrs. Cook was born May 6, 1923, in Bronwood, GA, to her late parents Arthur Patton Davis and Effie Amanda Weathersby Davis. She grew up in a time when everyone in the family had to do their part. Bessie worked hard in the textile Industry while raising a family and taking care of her home and in later years worked in the PX at Fort Benning. Bessie was a member of Trinity Temple Assembly of God and loved to go to church when her health would allow her to do so. She was known for her hand-written cards, poetry, the wonderful cakes she baked, her kindness, sweet godliness, and her passion for taking care of her family.
Along with her parents, Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Lewis Otis Cook of Columbus; a sister Louise Jones of Hawkinsville, and a brother Thomas Davis of Covington. Those left to cherish her memory are her three sons, Thomas (Helen) Cook of Morrow, GA, Gerald (Linda) Cook of Lawrenceville, GA, and Carlton Ray Cook of Columbus, GA; three grandchildren, Susan, Hank, and Lisa (Chris); three great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends.
