Audrey Mayer, age 86, recent resident of Wichita, Kansas and former resident of Columbus, passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at her residence. Funeral services are scheduled at Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, Columbus on Monday, September 19, 2016, 10 a.m. with Reverend Larry Rollins officiating. Interment will follow at Main Post Cemetery, Fort Benning, Georgia. The family will receive friends in the St. Elmo room of the funeral home on Sunday, September 18, 2016 from 2-4 p.m.
Mrs. Mayer, daughter of the late Thomas Harrington Groover and Miranda Youmans Groover, was born December 22, 1929 in Ludowici, Georgia. After graduating from high school she began a career as a telephone operator and later worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital for many years before retiring. Mrs. Mayer was a member of St. Peter United Methodist Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, George Mayer; two sisters; and two brothers.
She is survived by three daughters, Debbie Davis and her husband Don of Smiths, Alabama, Pam Long and her husband David of Wichita, Kansas, and Vicki McIntosh and her husband Lester of Wichita, Kansas; three sons, George Mayer, Jr. and his wife Ginger of Headland, Alabama, Tom Mayer and his wife Terry of Siler City, North Carolina, and Steve Mayer and his wife Trish of Wichita, Kansas; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandsons; other relatives and friends.
