Alex Ramsey Jarrett, Jr., 94, of Columbus, GA passed away Friday, May 13, 2016 at Columbus Hospice. A Funeral Service will be held Monday, May 16, 2016 at 3:00pm in the Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby with Reverend David Howle officiating. Burial will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Jarrett, son of the late Halley Parker and Alex Ramsey Jarrett, Sr., was born November 11, 1921 in Lumpkin, GA, but was a lifetime resident of Columbus. He was a graduate of Jordan High School in 1941 and member of Edgewood Baptist Church. After high school, Mr. Jarrett joined the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Machinist Mate serving his country honorably during Civilian Conservation Corps in 1941 and World War II from 1942-1946. He went overseas in the Pacific in October 1943 and was on the invasion of the Gilbert Islands and was on the campaigns of the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Marianna Islands and Caroline Islands. Mr. Jarrett served nearly two years in the South and Central Pacific during World War II. He returned to the United States for a 30-day leave and was in Memphis, TN on VJ Day. Mr. Jarrett went back to California for duty aboard a battleship, but the war ended and he didn’t get to go back overseas. He was honorably discharged in Jacksonville, FL on January 2, 1946. Mr. Jarrett participated in the first West Georgia Honor Flight for World War II Veterans to Washington, D.C. In 1948, he started working for Southern Natural Gas Company, which became Sonat, until he retired in 1981 after 33 years of service.
Other than his parents, Mr. Jarrett was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn Gullatte Jarrett and two sisters, Eleanor Grimes and Francis Tilley. He is survived by his son Alex Randy Jarrett (Diane) of Columbus, GA; daughter Debra Jarrett of Columbus, GA; grandsons Andrew Thorpe Jarrett (Jenni) and Jeffrey Alan Trice; granddaughters Allisamy Jarrett and Jennifer Joiner (Tim); great grandson Peyton Trice; great granddaughters Harper Trice, Lily Joiner and Laken Joiner; sister Betty Middlebrooks; brother W.D. Jarrett (Frieda); numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
