Al Pollard was one of a kind! He was my first boss out of law school, and he taught me what it meant to be an attorney and a professional. Al made every client feel as if they were the firm’s ONLY client, and he was a wonderful teacher. In addition, he was a great friend. He invited me (and many others) to be part of his extended family, and my heart goes out to William and Barnes in their time of loss.

My career working with hospital leaders across the state and nation would never have been possible without Al’s mentorship, and I’m forever grateful for his friendship.

My deepest sympathy to the family. I was fortunate enough to work for Al at Nexsen Pruet. He was a pleasure to work for and a good friend to all who knew him.  He will be deeply missed by all. 

I worked for him for a number of years. I found him to be supportive and easy to talk with. He certainly had the qualities to be a leader in the field of law.

Recently hired attorneys and employees of the Maynard Nexsen law firm, and those who work there in the future, may not be able to fully appreciate the contributions that attorney Al Pollard made both to the establishment and growth of the firm, and to his community.   Al was a law student and a law clerk at the firm when I reported there as a new attorney in 1972.  Then the firm had 10 lawyers and I was number 10.  In those days, the firm was small enough so that all of the attorneys could sit around a conference table and the lowliest of us could hear what the members had to say about potential new hires.  I remember hearing one of the partner’s say “Al Pollard is bright, personable, organized, and a natural leader.  I think we need him!”  There was unanimous agreement that he was right.   Al quickly became an expert in healthcare law, and would hold the position of managing partner for 13 years.   Those were years when the firm grew rapidly both in size and in areas of expertise.   Managing a fast growing law firm while continuing to provide personal, professional legal services to the firm’s clients are difficult tasks.  Al did both well.     

Al Pollard was a connector of people, generating opportunities for others throughout his career.  In, 1974, Al joined Nexsen Pruet Jacobs & Pollard and quickly moved up the ranks as one of the most charismatic and capable attorneys in the Firm’s history. Al’s impact on Nexsen Pruet was very significant. He started the Firm’s health care practice group by himself based on great vision, instinct and personal relationships and grew it to be one of the most impressive health care law practices in the Southeast. Moreover, he made sure that these important client relationships would continue after he retired from the Firm. Al also served as Chairman of the Firm for 13 years and under his leadership, the Firm began the growth path that it is still on as he pushed for the opening of the Charleston, Greenville, Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh offices and expansion of new practice areas including construction, bankruptcy, and economic development. Al retired from Nexsen Pruet in 2005 but his legacy at the Firm is still very prominent as many current Nexsen Pruet attorneys were recruited by or worked closely with Al and he had a very positive impact on their professional careers  Al was also one of the original founders of Healthy Learners which is now a statewide nonprofit that has served tens of thousands of South Carolina students who were suffering from medical conditions that could be a barrier to learning. Al’s commitment to helping people allowed him to recognize the need that existed in South Carolina classrooms and to go to the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine to help create the charity that is now Healthy Learners. Al’s career was sadly cut short by health issues but his impact on Nexsen Pruet and the clients and communities that it serves continues to be felt. The entire Nexsen Pruet family will continue to keep Al and his family in our thoughts and prayers.

He was a force of nature who was quick with a smile and words of encouragement for his colleagues. As our managing partner, Al had a major impact on the growth and direction of the law firm . I offer my deepest sympathy and condolences to Al's family.  Al was my first boss as a lawyer and supported and encouraged my development at Nexsen Pruet.  HIs dedication to and genuine concern for cients was well-known and those qualities, plus his intellect, made Al a "go to" lawyer at Nexsen Pruet. Of particular importance to me was Al's unwavering support in my ability to work part time at Nexsen Pruet when my chilren were born and his understanding of the need to balance work and life demands for lawyers at Nexsen Pruet.  He was a champion of young female attorneys and with his help and support, Nexsen Pruet enacted one of the first maternity policies for associates and partners in the State.  I would not have joined, and later stayed with, Nexsen Pruet were it not for Al.

Al Pollard was a great attorney and friend. Al hired me as a law clerk in 1976 and later as an attorney. He was a trusted advisor when I was Mayor of Columbia. I think his greatest love as an attorney was his work with the Sisters of Charity and their charitable organization "Healthy Learners." Rest in Peace my friend. Bob Coble

Fond memories of time spent with Al in the Brookland-Cayce High School band. May he rest in peace. His family will be in our thoughts and prayers.
