COLUMBIA - Memorial service for William Lucas “Luke” Harrington Jr., 87, will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church, Columbia. Visitation with family will be held in Jackson Hall following the service. The family will also receive friends on Wednesday from 6 until 8:00 p.m. at Luke’s home. Burial will be private. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Mr. Harrington died Sunday, May 11, 2014. Born September 1, 1926, in Kingstree, he was a son of the late William Lucas and Olive Ernestine Harrington. Luke graduated from his beloved Clemson University in 1949 and then returned to Kingstree to run his father’s farm where he received the “Future Farmer of America” award. He met and married Julia “Loubie” Whitaker in 1954 and they had a wonderful 60 years together. Luke worked for DuPont in Camden and Waynesboro, Va., but then moved to Columbia to operate the family’s Carolina Ceramics Brick plant.
Luke served in the Merchant Marine Cadet Corps. He was a lifelong member of IPTAY and was a devoted Lion in the Columbia NE Lions Club Chapter for over 50 years where he held every office and received the highest recognition given by the International Foundation (The Melvin Jones Fellowship award). Luke also served as an Elder at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church, as well as on the Visitation Committee. He was an avid hunter, loved Clemson football, traveled all over the world and enjoyed spending his time with family and friends.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Loubie; his sister, Loree H. Gandy; his three daughters, Julia Karen Harrington, Diane H. Correll and her husband, John, Rebecca H. Clawson and her husband, States; four grandchildren, William States Clawson, Rebecca Candler Clawson, Julia Kinzie Correll and Leslie Harrington Correll.
