Funeral service for William “Bill” Montague Thompson Sr., 90, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Entombment will be private. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at the funeral home.
Bill passed away Saturday, April 16, 2016. Born October 6, 1925, in Greenville, he was the son of the late James David and Estella Sawyer Thompson. He was the husband of the late Mildred Taylor Thompson. Bill was a member of Northeast Presbyterian Church and a longtime member of Spring Valley Country Club. Bill served in the U.S. Army as a Paratrooper during World War II stationed in Philippines. After returning to the states, he attended the University of South Carolina. Bill was known as an astute businessman and was instrumental in merging several companies into SCA Services and taking it public in 1971. A lifelong entrepreneur, Bill started many businesses, the latest being Thompson Services Corporation with his sons, Monty and John.
He is survived by a daughter, Lisa Thompson Bland (Hugh) of Edgefield; sons, William “Monty” Thompson Jr. (Jodi) of Columbia, John Taylor Thompson Sr. of Columbia; grandchildren, Caroline Bland, Mitchell Bland, William M. Thompson III, Tyler Thompson Daukas, J. Taylor Thompson Jr.; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Constance “Connie” Kemp of Ninety-Six, S.C.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Carolina Children’s Home, 3201 Trenholm Road, PO Box 4465, Columbia, SC 29204 or a charity of one’s choice.
