A native of Charleston, Tom was born October 6, 1925 to Thomas J. Foy, Sr. and Ethel Purse Foy. Tom attended the College of Charleston for a year prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II. While serving in the Pacific on a P.T. Boat, he received the American Area Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, and Victory Medal of World War II. After proudly serving his country he enrolled at The Citadel and in 1948 received a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He is also a graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Banking A.I.B. After graduating from The Citadel he accepted a position with Citizens and Southern National Bank in Charleston, SC. Working his way up the corporate ladder he relocated to Spartanburg, SC and then to Columbia, SC and in 1978 he retired as Senior Vice President. While at Citizens & Southern National Bank Tom opened a small side business known as Wildo Janitorial Service Company and upon retiring from the Bank he went full force with that small business, changing the name to WJS Building Services and growing it into a very successful commercial janitorial business, where he worked until he decided to “really retire” and sold the business in December 2000.
Tom was a past member of the Spartanburg Country Club, Past Vice President of the Spartanburg and Columbia Chapter Lions Club, Past Treasurer of Citadel Club, Past Chairmanship of Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Bank Administration Institute Officer and Instructor in Central, SC, National Vice President of NABAC. When his children were young he was very involved in the scouting program and was an Assistant Scout Master of Troop #902. Tom also assisted with the Columbia College Rebuilding Fund. At the time of his death he was an active Member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Forest Lake Country Club where he was an avid golfer and played golf regularly up until he was 96 years old. Tom loved to spend time with his family especially at the beach, he cared deeply for the outdoors and taught his children to always respect Mother Nature. He will always be remembered for his kind, gentle, sweet loving spirit and he will be greatly missed by all.
In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his son, Patrick Thomas Foy. He is survived by his loving, caring, and compassionate wife of 73 years, Nona Willette Snipes Foy, two daughters; Lee Ann Price (Dial), Janice Maureen Dinkel (Don); two sons; Barry, Thomas, III, six grandchildren; Adam (Nina), Maia, Ella, Cherry Foy, Maureen Price, Dr. Ashlee Price Gregory (Joe), and two Great Grandchildren Caelan and Teagan.
The family would like to thank the Nurses and Care Givers at MUSC Northeast as they did an outstanding job caring for Tom, their compassion for him and the family will never be forgotten. The family would also like to thank the nurses with Heart of Hospice for their care and sympathetic manner.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Boys Farm, Inc. in Newberry, SC or to St. Thomas-More Catholic Church Building Fund or to the charity of one’s choice, in memory of Thomas J. Foy, Jr.
A Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 5:30 p.m. December 13, 2022 at Dunbar Funeral Home – Devine Street Chapel with a Visitation immediately following from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. December 14, 2022 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial to follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
