COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Thomas Porter Barber Jr., 97, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 5, 2016, at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 9:15 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service in the church parlor. Burial in the church memorial gardens will be private. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mr. Barber died Monday, August 1, 2016. Born in Fairfax, he was the son of the late Thomas Porter Barber Sr. and Ollie Stallings Barber. He was married to the late Sara Agnes Preacher Barber for 77 years. For 35 years, he was a member of Swallow Savannah United Methodist Church in Allendale, where he served as chairman of the administrative board. He was currently a member of Trenholm Road UMC where he was a member of The Medlock Friendship Sunday School class. Thomas was also a licensed real estate broker in Allendale, where he was also the owner of the Barber Motor Company that included the Pontiac, GMC, Chrysler and Plymouth dealership. He attended the University of S.C. Surviving are his son, Thomas Porter Barber III (Pamela) of Newberry; five daughters, Mrs. William Pherigo (Sandra) of Columbia, Mrs. John D. Boney (Sarah Anne) of Barnwell, Mrs. William Gunnells (Portia) of Columbia, Mrs. Larry Sorrell (Monnene) of Columbia, Mrs. George Estes (Beth) of Columbia; 13 grandchildren, William Pherigo (Suzanne) of Fort Collins, Colo., Durham Boney (Sandi) of Columbia, Walter Boney (Amy) of Barnwell, Mrs. Jerre Threatt (Tiffany) of Clinton, William Gunnells Jr. (Brittnee) of Brevard, N.C., Mrs. Heath Hatchell (Saralyn) of Alpharetta, Ga., Brian Sorrell (Lindsay) of Columbia, Mrs. Justin Mitchum (Portia) of Liberty, Thomas Barber IV of Pickens, Mrs. Ryan Doherty (Sandra) of Rock Hill, Merrick Estes (Jennifer) of Ft. Mill, Thomas Estes (Nancy) of Kennesaw, Ga., Mrs. Jay Floyd (Carene) of Charleston; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, George Herbert Barber of Newberry; sisters, Elizabeth Barber Steadman of North Augusta and Louise Barber Fulmer of Springfield.
