COLUMBIA - Shirley Sims McCue Knox, 83, won her Victory on Sunday, January, 10, 2021. Shirley was born in Barnesville, Georgia to the late Rob Lamar Sims and Francis Ward Sims. Upon graduating from Gordon Military College (HS) in 1956, she trained as an X-Ray technician in Atlanta and then worked in radiology at Georgia Baptist Hospital.
She married the first love of her life, the late Lt. Col. James A. McCue, Sr., happily started their family, and traveled the country and Europe during his military career. She loved the U.S. military and cherished the life-long friendships she made at bases around the world. She married the second love of her life, the late Thomas Presley Knox, Jr., with whom she shared a love of faith, family and travel. She was a loving and devoted wife and caregiver to both.
Mrs. Knox was a dedicated member of Shandon United Methodist church for over fifty years. She was always happy to serve in any capacity needed - from rocking babies in the nursery to serving on the Administrative Board. She was an active member of the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Betty Bruner Circle. Shirley was a member of the Social Survey Club, the Garden Club, Mid-Carolina Camellia Club and served on the board of the Killingsworth House.
Shirley’s life was one of service to God, country and others. All who knew her were aware of her passion for her family. She was a loving wife, a devoted mother and a joyful Grandmother! She loved crafting, music, reading and traveling with her family. She especially delighted in being at the beach with a house full of family and friends.
She was predeceased by her son, James Albert McCue Jr. and her brother, John Anderson Sims. Surviving are her children, son, Joseph McCue (Julie); daughter, Anne Marie McCue; son, Rob McCue (Heather), all of Columbia; stepchildren, Charlotte Canida (Bob) of Madison, Indiana; Irene Brock (Tom) of Roanoke, Virginia; grandchildren, Ryan McCue (Lauren), Cory McCue; Ellerslie and Julian McCue, Tom Brock III (Meg), Susan Brock Creekmore, Christy Canida (Eric Wilhelm), Ben Canida (Becky); great-grandchildren, Aiden Brock, Kaitlyn and Ashley Creekmore, Lilly, Ava and Kate Canida, Corvidae and Procyon Canida-Wilhelm, Amelia McCue; and nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express thanks for the caregivers from Homecare Solutions and Lighthouse Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Shandon United Methodist Church, the Shirley McCue Knox scholarship at the University of South Carolina School of Music, or the Thomas P. Knox, Jr. Music and Arts Fund at Shandon UMC.
A private graveside service will be held. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
