Shirley Elaine Bacon

COLUMBIA - A celebration of life for Shirley Elaine Bacon will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2016 at the home of her daughter, Janice L Bacon. She passed away January 1, 2016 following a brief illness. Shirley Elaine Davey was born in Highland Park, Michigan September 1, 1925. Her parents had come to the United States from England and her father was employed by Cadillac in Detroit, Michigan. Her mother was a teacher. She graduated as valedictorian of her high school class in Highland Park at age 16. She played the violin and piano and was an active member of Highland Park Methodist church. During WWII she met Ronald Dennis Bacon, RAF of Street, England. They became engaged, and after the war was over, he immigrated to the United States under the War Bride Act. Shirley had worked for The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company as an executive staff assistant. When she and Ron moved to Jacksonville, FL, she was the assistant to the Dean of Students at Jacksonville University. She and Ron both were realtors after their retirement. Shirley and Ron were both only children, and most of their relatives remained in England. Together they had two children, Janice, of Columbia, SC and Keith, of Covington, GA and two granddaughters, Morgan and Anne Marie Gerstner of Columbia, SC. Shirley enjoyed serving as a Girl Scout leader, square-dancing and doing arts and crafts. She maintained a love of reading and enjoyed gardening and singing in the church choir. Her positive spirit, witty comments and independent personality will be remembered by many. She enjoyed being a member of the Contemporary Issues Sunday School class of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church and the Agnes Rogers Circle The family would like to thank the medical staff, nursing assistants and other devoted personnel of National Healthcare, Lexington for their kind and loving care during the months that Shirley resided there. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, 3401 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204.
