SGM Kenneth E. Irving, a proud twenty-seven-year Veteran of the United States Army, passed away June 28th, 2023. Born September 29, 1940, in Sayer, Pennsylvania, he attended Canton High School. Kenneth joined the Army in 1957. During his first tour in Germany, he met his wife, Helga Martin. Besides several tours to Germany, Kenneth served in Vietnam, Korea, and various posts in the United States. During Kenneth’s distinguished career, he rose to the rank of Sergeant Major. After retiring from Ft. Jackson, he remained in Columbia, SC.
Kenneth’s greatest goal in life was to help others. He never knew a stranger. He loved to sing and whistle and make people laugh and see the positive side of life. For over twenty years Kenneth volunteered at the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and became known as Ken the Whistling Volunteer.
Kenneth loved his family and friends, all animals, and serving others. He was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his wife, Helga, mother, Thelma Freeman and stepfather, Haldine Freeman. He is survived by his daughter, Gabriele Nysveen, grandson, Daniel Nysveen, son-in-law, Larry Nysveen and close friends.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
