January 30, 1945 - August 18, 2023
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Sarah Elizabeth Greene Goldman on August 18, 2023, in Columbia, SC. Sarah was born on January 30, 1945, in White Plains, NY, to Virginia and (Eulan) Tyree Greene.
In 1967, Sarah earned her Bachelor of Social Work degree from High Point College in High Point, NC. Shortly thereafter, while residing in Boston, MA, she met the love of her life, Richard, whom she married on April 16, 1972. Richard and Sarah built a life together, residing in Chelmsford, MA, for most of their married life and retiring to Columbia, SC, in 2014.
Sarah’s life was a symphony of service, love, humor, and intellect. She is survived by her devoted husband, Richard, adoring sister, Martha (Jack) Packard and her sister-in-law, Jane Dunlap. She was a devoted mother to her two daughters, Rachael (Richard) Gorbutt and Leah (Dan) Sarantopoulos. Sarah enjoyed her role as “Grammy” to Natalie and Caroline Gorbutt and Tobin and Holland Sarantopoulos and as “Aunt Sarah” to her nieces and nephews.
Sarah shared her passion for music through her active involvement with the Merrimack Valley Sweet Adelines, which became an important part of her adult life. Her children fondly remember singing songs beside her as she played the piano in their childhood home. She modeled selflessness through many acts of volunteerism during her life. Sarah was an avid reader and a nightly Jeopardy! couch-competitor, who also enjoyed completing daily crossword puzzles. She was unafraid to learn and try new things, as exemplified by teaching herself how to operate a computer and ultimately earning a position as a first-line manager in customer support at IBM.
Sarah’s dynamic and lively personality made her a stranger to none. She loved fiercely and had a laugh that was contagious. Even in her final years, she made an indelible impression on those who surrounded her. Her family and friends will remember the vibrancy of her spirit, her quick wit, and her compassionate heart. Sarah’s family is grateful for the love and support that has been shown during this difficult time and extend profound thanks to the staff of Wildewood Downs who provided Sarah with excellent care. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to either the Merrimack Valley Sweet Adelines or the Alzheimer's Association.
We know Sarah’s soul is now at peace. Her legacy will continue through all who were fortunate enough to know and love her. A Celebration of Life will be held on September 9, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, located at 3926 Devine Street in Columbia, SC.
