Born in Bennettsville, SC, she was the daughter of Mr. Eldred Lee Easterling and Mrs. Willie Belle Wright Easterling. She graduated with honors from Winthrop College (now University), where she was active in student government and a member of the annual May Court.
After graduation, she worked with Tennessee Eastman Company in Kingsport, TN. It was there that she met and married James A. Kummer of Bristol, TN. They moved to Columbia when he was transferred to Carolina Eastman Company.
In her younger days, she enjoyed playing tennis, traveling in the U.S. as well as to other countries, and visiting the beaches of South Carolina. She liked playing bridge and over the years was a member of several clubs, where she made many dear friends. She also loved to dance and was a former member of the Saraband Dance Club. For over fifty years, she held a part-time position as an executive assistant with a Human Resources consulting firm in Columbia. She was a former member of the Rockbridge Club, Wildewood Country Club, and the Summit Club, and was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Columbia.
Sarah was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Mark M. Kummer, his wife Suzy, and their children, A.J. and Alaina; her son, Matthew H. Kummer and his daughter, Katherine, and her mother, Penny. Also surviving are a sister, Dorothy Emmer of Houston, TX, and three nephews, as well as a cousin, Thomas McKenzie of North Carolina. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her oldest son, James A. Kummer, Jr., and her special friend, Harry Marsh.
Because she was devoted to caring for all animals, especially dogs and cats, it is suggested that any memorials be made to an animal protection organization or to the charity of your choice.
A family graveside service is planned for a later date. Elmwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with the arrangements.
