COLUMBIA - Funeral service for Rupert Leon Thompson, Jr., 75, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at the funeral home. Mr. Thompson died Sunday, August 10, 2014. Born in High Point, N.C., he was a son of the late Rupert Leon Thompson, Sr. and Christine Latham Thompson. He graduated from the University of S.C. with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Masters of Business Administration. He owned Rupert L. Thompson Jr. CPA and was an adjunct professor at USC and Midlands Tech for eight years. A member of MENSA, he coached 28 seasons over 17 years in Dixie Youth and Trenholm Park Little League baseball. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in Beach Jumper Unit Two. He was a charter member of Kathwood Baptist Church, where he was ordained as a deacon. He also attended Sunday School at Shandon Baptist Church. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he loved baseball, especially the Atlanta Braves, Elton John (“pre” Lion King), the TV show “Survivor”, Isaac Asimov and the family dog, Mikey. He was a past member of Workshop Theater Board of Directors. Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Alfreda Mouchet Thompson; son, Dean L. Thompson (Kelly) of Mountain Lakes, N.J.; daughter, Dale T. Thomas (Scott) of Lexington; son, Shane M. Thompson of Waltham, Mass.; brother, Dr. Barry L. Thompson (Karen) of Edgefield; grandchildren, Davis R. Thompson, Kelsey Z. Thompson, Harrison F. Thompson, Derek S. Thomas, Corey J. Thomas, Jordan R. Thomas; and numerous nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Alan Philip Thompson.
