COLUMBIA - Robert Lee McCarty, Sr. lost his life Sunday morning, October 4th, 2015, during the tragic circumstances of the historic weather and flood that occurred. Swept away by the Gills Creek overflow, Mr. McCarty left behind his family, friends and acquaintances to mourn the loss of one the kindest and sweetest of human beings. Ever one to help someone out, crack a joke, and empathize with the problems of others, he is irreplaceable and will be sorely missed by all. A proud member of the United States military, with the consent of his father, Bob joined the army in 1954 at 17, retiring as an E-8 in 1977. While serving his country, he was deployed to Korea during the Korean Conflict and later to Viet Nam where he worked supplying “MASH” units. After retirement from the military in 1983, Bob joined the S. C. State Housing and Development Authority and quickly rose to senior inspector in the HUD housing division. In this capacity he was able to help many South Carolina citizens who were in difficult circumstances to procure housing. He was very aware of the needs of many South Carolinians and was grateful for the opportunity to help. He retired from the Housing Authority in 2005. Born on April 21, 1937, the son of the late Will S. and Lily Mae McCarty of Irwinville, Georgia, Mr. McCarty has many family members who grieve for him. His loving wife of 33 years, Lois Anne H. McCarty, son, Robert Lee McCarty, Jr., his sister, Sue McCarty Phillips, stepdaughter, Julie A. Musselman, and her husband, James A. Wade. Also, numerous grandchildren, Sean M. McCarty, Kristen L. McCarty, William McCarty, and step-grandchildren, Savanah A. Musselman, Brandon A. Musselman, Kennedy A. Musselman, and S. Riley Wade have suffered the loss of a wonderful grandfather. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 12th at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. A memorial service will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13th followed by interment in Fort Jackson National Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that anyone wishing to honor Bob make a donation to the Wounded Warriors Program.
