Robert Lee Galphin, Jr., M.D., 89, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2022 in Columbia. Dr. G, as he was commonly known by patients and fellow healthcare professionals alike, was a staple in the Midlands medical community for more than 60 years.
A graduate of the Medical College of Georgia in 1958, Bob treated tens of thousands of patients with critical pulmonary issues, as well as being an expert in sleep medicine and, later in his career, offering comfort to patients under his hospice care. Bob was instrumental as Lexington Medical Center expanded and became one of the most extensive care facilities in the state, and he was a founding partner of Pulmonary Associates of Carolina. In addition to his patient care, Bob also offered his medical expertise as the Corporate Medical Director of Medical Services of America and was on the teaching staff at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
Before practicing medicine in Columbia, he served eight years in the United States Air Force as a flight surgeon. When not caring for others in the community, Bob’s varied interests spanned many different areas over the decades, including sailing, farming, travel and a few thousand rounds of golf.
Bob is survived by his wife of 41 years, Linda of Columbia, as well as four of his children: Leigh Mesco (Gene) of Flintstone, GA; Mary Slakie (Brian) of Chattanooga, TN; Melissa McEniry (Kevin) of Memphis, TN; and Patrick Galphin (Carrie) of Memphis, TN, sister Beverly Clyde of Porter, TX as well as 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Jane Galphin, as well as his daughter Beth Allen and his son Robert Galphin, III.
A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, January 20, 2023 at The Capital City Club in Columbia from 5-8 pm. Private interment will be at the U.S. Veterans Cemetery in Columbia at a later date.
