Lexington, South Carolina - Nina Salley McGregor Brown of Lexington and Columbia was born on October 11, 1922. She departed this earth and was reunited with her husband of 59 years, Henry Edward “Ed” Brown, on November 4, 2021. Born in Columbia, SC, Mrs. Brown was the daughter of the late Edith Salley and Ernest Lamar McGregor. After graduation from University High School she attended the University of South Carolina where she was a freshman cheerleader, treasurer of her junior class, and member of Delta Zeta sorority. Nina was a proud Gamecock and served as secretary of the University of SC Alumni Association and on the Board of Directors for the Centurion Club.
After university, Nina was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker actively involved in many community organizations and her church. She served as Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, Middlers Group Coordinator, and Circle Chairman. Once her children were grown, she worked on the staff of the SC Dental Association and Bethel United Methodist Church Pre-School.
Nina was a member of Robert Burns Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Columbia Historical Society, United States Postal Service Auxiliary, University Associates, and Columbia Executives Club (secretary and treasurer).
As a member of Shandon Presbyterian Church since 1939, she served as Women of the Church officer, and member of the Ray Riddle Sunday School class, Tuesday Lunch Group, Tuesday Book fellowship and XYZ Gathering. Nina also served as secretary of the Congaree Presbytery Women’s Council.
Nina was an avid bridge player and member of the Monday Bridge Club, Third Wednesday Bridge Club and First Friday Bridge Club. She also shared her love of gardening with fellow members of the Lilac Garden Club for over 50 years. Nina loved to entertain and hosted many club gatherings at her home. She was a beach lover and enjoyed time at their family vacation home at Surfside Beach.
Nina is survived by her daughter, Salley McGregor Davis (James H.) of Columbia; her son, Henry Edward “Ward” Brown Jr. (Pamela P.) of Meggett, SC: her grandson, Elliott E. Ashley (Carla B.) and great-granddaughter Cullum of Columbia, SC; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Nina had been a resident of the Columbia Presbyterian Community since January 2004 where she enjoyed spending time with old friends and made many new friends. The family is grateful for the home that Nina enjoyed at the Community and the care that she received there. Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, a graveside service of remembrance will be held on Wednesday, November 10 at 11 o’clock at Pen Branch Cemetery, North, SC.
