COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Nelida I. Caballero, 90, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2016 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel. Nelida was born in Matanzas, Cuba. She was the beloved daughter of the late Maria Isabel Hidalgo Gato and the late Ramon Alonso Granda. She was a dedicated daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She reveled in being with family and friends. She taught her children strength when she left her country, her friends and family to start a new life in a new country so her children could dream any kind of future they wanted. She taught her children perseverance and love by caring and tending for her mother and then her husband till they were called Home. Nelida taught her children and grandchildren what it means to selflessly nurture others. Her grandchildren benefited from her unconditional love, especially those whom she helped raise. She always bemoaned the inability to do more for her Miami grandchildren. She is survived by her brother, Ramon Alonso (Herminia) of Staten Island NY; her children, Dr. Armando Caballero of Mississippi, Nelida Caballero (Oscar Perez), Gloria Caballero, both of Columbia, SC and Dr. Orlando Caballero (Tania) of Miami, FL; her adored grandchildren, Daniel (Jenn), Alexandra, Conner, Hannah, and AJ, all of Columbia; Alex, Samantha, Armand Jude, Julian and Elizabeth, all of Miami, FL. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Dr. Armando Caballero and her brother, Orlando Alonso. The family wishes to thank all her friends throughout the years who were her extended family and provided a sense of comfort in her new country, especially Gladys Pallares, Nilda Ortiz and the late Siria Otero who were essentially the sisters she never had. The selfless emotional and physical assistance provided by Berta Zavarse during this last year has been invaluable to the family. Saying goodbye is very hard but we are comforted with the knowledge that she's back in the arms of the love of her life. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 3600 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205.
