Nathan was born on December 25, 1924 in Oklahoma City, OK to Meyer and Gale Picow. On June 18, 1953 he married Lilyan Ginsburg Picow. They raised two sons, Ian and Jeffrey.
Nathan lost both his parents by the time he was 17 years old. He graduated from Central High School in 1943, and followed his older brother, Eddie Picow, shortly after from Oklahoma City to Columbia in 1945. At only 21 years old, he started King’s Jewelers in 1946, where he was known as “Mr. King” by so many of his customers. King’s is still open to this day and run by his sons, Ian and Jeffrey. Nathan was involved in running the business until he was 95 years old, when the pandemic hit in March.
Nephew Jeffrey Ginsburg described his Uncle perfectly as “he clearly had a gigantic capacity to love that was so enormous it dwarfed most humans. He was known for having an extraordinary wonderfulness. We have always known him to have a strong sense of humor, an acute sensitivity to the beauty of those around him, and a cool contemporary persona that always seemed current and not dated.”
Nathan was preceded in death by his father, Meyer Picow, his mother, Gale Picow, his three brothers - Jack, Charles, and Eddie, and his wife, Lilyan Picow. He is survived by his two children, Ian (Marilyn) and Jeffrey Picow (Sherie), and grandchildren, Brandon (Mari Kate) and Eden Picow. Survived by brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Phil and Jane Ginsburg of Connecticut, nephews - Jeff (Lu) and Gary (Pam).
The family would like to thank Dr. Jeff Hook and Dr. Barry Feldman for their tremendous medical care, and true professionalism. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made out to JDRF or to the Beth Shalom Synagogue in Columbia, SC.
