Myra was born and raised in Edgefield County, South Carolina, where she grew up alongside her siblings: Mary Jean Dowling, Ann Smith Day (Danny) of Johnston, South Carolina, and Elizabeth Smith of Smyrna, Georgia.
Myra is survived by her nieces and nephews: Drew Dowling (Debbie) of Concord, North Carolina; Elizabeth Dowling (Hank Boland) of Chicago, Illinois; Jacob Smith III (Christine) of Johnston, South Carolina; Chrissy Smith Wilson (Mark) of Lexington, South Carolina; Ame Day Holmes (Woody) of Trenton, South Carolina; and Daniel Day (Krissee) of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.
She leaves behind a legacy of cherished friendships, particularly with Pam Hawkins, Carol Moore, and Cathy Goff, who became like sisters to her.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Myra's niece, Ame Holmes, and her sister, Ann, for their invaluable care and support following a tragic fall.
She began her career in 1966 at the University of South Carolina in the Order Department at the McKissick Library. She also held positions in the Institute for Archeology and Anthropology department, the Department of Preventive and Family Medicine at USC School of Medicine, Institutional Research and finally in the Equal Opportunity Programs Office.
Beyond her professional contributions, Myra was actively involved in state societies, serving on several of their boards. She retired in 2017 and remained engaged as an active member of the USC Professional Retiree's Association. Retirement afforded her the opportunity to travel extensively, both within the US and across Europe.
Myra with her cherished friends, Judy and Pam Hawkins, embarked on numerous adventures, including trips to Disney World, exhilarating Disney Cruises, and visits to various Disney resorts.
A woman of diverse interests, Myra was a member of the Old 96 District NSDAR. She was instrumental in the formation of the Cherokee Garden Neighborhood Association, demonstrating her dedication to community involvement.
An independent spirit with an insatiable curiosity, Myra was always seeking the next adventure. She was an avid reader, a passionate film enthusiast, and a devoted supporter of the USC Lady Gamecocks. Her love for the outdoors extended to her enjoyment of yardwork and gardening.
Myra was a cherished sister, deeply loved by her family.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with a reception following the service.
