Mildred “Millie” Hoff McQuitty, 100, died at home on April 17, 2024, surrounded by family. She was born in Pilot Grove, Missouri, to Anna and Frank Hoff and spent her childhood on the family farm. She met her husband, Floyd, in the nearby town of New Franklin. They were married in 1940 when Floyd was called to active duty in the National Guard at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Millie and Floyd lived in Columbia’s historic Gonzalez Gardens before purchasing a home in the Rosewood area of Columbia, returning there after deployments to Germany and Charleston, South Carolina. The couple had three daughters: Phyllis Yates (the late Hoyt Yates), Gwen (Rev. Mr. Malcolm) Skipper, and Patty (Terry) Wilson. After Floyd’s death in 1954, Millie raised the girls on her own.
An active member of St. Francis de Sales Church and later St. Joseph Catholic Church in Columbia, Millie was involved in the St. Joseph’s Women’s Society, initially in the Walsh Guild. She used her gardening and sewing skills to support church ministries—frequently creating floral centerpieces for church events, decorating the church during the Christmas and Easter seasons, and laundering and sewing church altar linens. She was also a member of the parish Bereavement Committee. In 2014, Millie was recognized as the parish’s Catholic Woman of the Year.
Millie was an avid card player and enjoyed playing Russian rummy, hand and foot, and bridge with friends and family members. She was active in the parish’s senior ministry’s Monday afternoon bridge games for many years.
She prided herself on preparing family meals, sewing clothes and gifts for her children and grandchildren, doing her own yard work, and making minor home repairs. She lived independently until her final illness and continued taking care of minor repairs well into her early 90s—sometimes to the distress of her children.
She is survived by a large family that spans four generations. In addition to her three girls, nieces, and nephews, she is survived by seven grandchildren: Karen Metzer, Kenny (Wendy) Yates, Jenks (Jodi) Skipper, Tracy Skipper (Randall Dong), Becky (Jerry) Levine, Leslie (Kevin) Loftis, and Wes (Honey) Wilson. She had ten great-grandchildren: Julia Ann (Jim) Kennedy, Timmy Metzer, Katie (Lance) Davis, Allison (Justin) Muller, Matthew Skipper (Carlie Fusco), Mary Ashley (Wesley) Turner, Coleman Yates, Madison Loftis, Aidan Dong, and Grace Skipper. She was also blessed with eight great-great-grandchildren: Jenni Kennedy, Jamie Kennedy, Michael Davis, Raina Turner, James Muller, Samuel Davis, Henry Muller, and Luna Franchuk. Millie was predeceased by her sisters Helen Hoff, Geraldine Swendrowski, and Isabelle Long, as well as her brothers Arthur Francis Hoff and Andy Hoff.
