LEXINGTON - Michael John Smith passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 5, 2017. He was born in Huntington, WV, the son of John and Hilda Smith. When Mike was 14 the family moved to Greenwood, SC. There he attended public schools and graduated from Greenwood High School. He then graduated from Lander University and received his Bachelor’s degree in History and a Minor in Art. In high school, Mike discovered golf and played for the Lander Golf team. As social time changes, he became active in the developing band and music scene that proliferated in Greenwood. Mike was a member of numerous performing groups in the Southwest, including the “Brotherhood” and “Michael and the Emotions.” It was during his senior year that Mike began working in the clothing business as an employee of Lindsey’s Men Store. He was enrolled by a friend to move to Columbia where he worked for Brittons Clothier, eventually rising to become a store manager.
During the Vietnam War, Mike was a member of the National Guard MP unit stationed in Saluda. He served for two years as a member of the military police. Mike also enjoyed the blessing of parenthood with the birth of his son, Mason, in May 1975. It was soon after that Mike began working for Taylor Publishing Company. Over a number of years, Mike had a successful and recognized career rising to receive many publishing accolades. He completed his career in 2010.
Mr. Smith is survived by his son, Mason Smith and his wife, Ashley. He is also survived by his brother, Phillip and his wife, Linda, along with two nephews, Evan (Amy) and Harrison. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Alston.
He was previously married to Alice Markowitz and Gail Steagall Smith. Mike appreciates his family and always loved Beach Music.
A chapel service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1715 Broad River Rd., Columbia, SC 29210.
