WEST COLUMBIA, SC - Melvin Hayes Mizell, 83, of Columbia, SC, passed away at the Still Hopes Episcopal retirement community on September 26, 2022. Hayes was born in High Point, NC, on November 1, 1938, to Julia Hayes Mizell and Clyde "Mike" Mizell. He graduated from Anderson (SC) Boys High School, Anderson Junior College, and Wofford College, and he pursued post-graduate studies at the University of South Carolina.
Hayes is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Thomas Swanson, and his children, Sally Lipe (Vance), Elizabeth Paige and Mark Mizell (Leah). Hayes is also survived by his grandchildren, Sarah Grace Lipe, Emma Lipe, Adriana Mizell and Abigail Mizell. He was predeceased by his grandson, Marley Lion.
Beginning in his undergraduate days, Hayes sought to be a change maker. His social justice work ranged from student activism for the desegregation of public places to creating equal opportunity for those facing obstacles in securing quality public K-12 education. He was sensitive to the hardship others faced, especially due to racial injustice. Hayes was committed to living by the words of Micah 6:8, “For what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God?”
Faith played a vital role in Hayes’s life; he showed a genuine commitment to both the Washington Street and the Trenholm Road United Methodist Churches. Eager to serve his church and to further his understanding of God’s calling in his life, Hayes became a dedicated member of church boards, Bible studies, prayer groups and mission projects.
In 1966, Hayes began his work for the American Friends Service Committee as a community advocate for desegregating South Carolina schools. President Jimmy Carter appointed Hayes as Chair to the National Advisory Council for the Education of Disadvantaged Children in 1979. He twice-served as a member of Richland One Board of School Commissioners, beginning in 1970 and again in 1982. In the late 1980’s, he worked closely with South Carolina Governor Richard Riley, developing legislation for more equitable school funding. Hayes later directed and administered grants for the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation’s Program for Student Achievement from 1987 to 2003, working with city school systems across the country to improve the quality of classroom instruction. In his role as Distinguished Senior Fellow for the Learning Forward organization, Hayes promoted quality professional development for educators. The United Way of the Midlands recognized Hayes in 2015 and again in 2020 for his many years of volunteer service on steering committees and the Education Council. Wings for Kids and Water Mission were important non-profit organizations which Hayes actively supported.
A memorial service will be held at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church in Columbia, SC, on Sunday, October 16th, at 3:00 pm. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 14th, at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hayes's memory to Wings for Kids, United Way of the Midlands, or Water Mission.
