Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday September 1, 2022 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel with burial to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and family from 12:00 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A reception will follow the burial at Creekside Restaurant and the family invites all to a celebration of life at Hazelwood Brewery. Superhero shirts are very welcome as appropriate attire. The family would like everyone to wear something they're comfortable in, whether it's traditional or something that reminds them of Matt, like a superhero t-shirt. Matt will be in his Captain America t-shirt and some close family members will be dressed similarly.
Matt was born January 27, 1986 in Columbia to Charles “Lucky” McKnight and Lisa Ann Bass McKnight. He was a 2004 graduate of Airport High School where he participated in football and weight lifting. In 2008, he served his country by enlisting in the Army National Guard. Matt was such a huge presence in any space that he occupied. A house was never full until he walked through the door with his big personality, silly jokes, and of course his opinions. A party never started until he arrived.
Matt lived his life to the fullest, he was a huge Star Wars fan, an animal lover, especially his cats and dogs and playing video games. Most importantly, Matt was dedicated to his family. He was a stickler for traditions and absolutely loved Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and the ability to make unfunny jokes hilarious.
He is predeceased by his paternal grandfather who lovingly called him “Cornbread”, Ryce Allen Bass, two grandmothers, Barbara Ann Bass and Jessie Marie McKnight and an uncle, Robert “Bobby” McKnight. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife and best friend, Emily McKnight; his mother, Lisa McKnight; great friend, Preston Dewyea; father, Lucky McKnight and Lisa Monteith; a brother, Michael “Mikey” McKnight and wife Anna; a niece, Lily “Lily Bear” McKnight; sister- in- law, Kaitlin Gottlieb; and a nephew, Gavin Gottlieb.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.dunbarfuneralhomedevine.com for the McKnight family.
