COLUMBIA Matt Walter King, Jr., 83, of Columbia, beloved father of daughters, Marsha K. Richardson (Rick) and Paula K. King (Todd) passed away on Friday, March 13, 2015. Memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 15, 2015, at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, 1 Still Hopes Dr., West Columbia, SC, with Chaplain Johnnie Davis officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the chapel. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Matt was born on August 13, 1931 in Newberry, SC. He was the son of the late Walter King, Sr. and Pauline B. King. He grew up primarily in Columbia, SC but his heart belonged to Garden City, SC where he enjoyed his passion for the beach, fishing and working in the yard. Matt’s lifelong career was at Nilson Van & Storage. He started as a helper, advanced to a driver, then manager to vice president to eventually becoming president in 2003. In addition, during his tenor, he held many prestigious positions within the transportation industry and fought diligently for their rights. He received many awards for his efforts. He retired in 2006. He served his country as a member of the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was also a member of the Eau Claire Masonic Lodge and Jamil Shrine Temple. In addition to his daughters, he is survived by his grandchildren, Griff Richardson (Millicent), Brooke Richardson, Colden King, Madison King; great-granddaughter, Ella Bell Richardson; as well as nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sisters, Margie Sligh, Paulette Jolly, Flara Bowlden; and a brother, Earl Wayne King. He is also preceded in death by his former wives,’ Matilda L. King and Wydenia King.
