COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Mary Burke Davis, 93, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 16, 2017 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with a private burial in Penn Branch Cemetery in North, South Carolina. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Mrs. Davis passed away on Wednesday, October 11, 2017. Born in Alcolu, S.C. on January 24, 1924, she was a daughter of the late George Washington Burke and Mattie Amelia Geddings Burke. Mary graduated from Tuomey Hospital Nursing Program in the mid 1940’s and was involved in opening the first coronary care unit in Columbia. She was active in the S.C. Medical Auxiliary. She served as a Guardian ad Litum, volunteered with the American Red Cross and participated in numerous other community activities. Mary was a longtime member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Surviving are her children, John G. Davis (Helen), Charles E. Davis (Shirley), Mary D. Ivey (Bud), Legare M. Davis (Sharon), and Jerome M. Davis, MD. (Kathy); sisters, Thelma B. Black of Alcolu, Jenny B. Durant of Manning, and Amelia B. Alderman of Roanoke, Va.; grandchildren, Allison D. Aitchison, Kristen D. Bozard, James Davis, and Katherine Davis; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John McMahon Davis, MD. and granddaughter, Anna Lyle Ivey.
