Mary Ann Hay passed away on Monday, the 15th of April 2024, at the age of 89. She was born in Douglass, South Carolina on the 29th of April 1934, the daughter of Harold Eugene and Mary Lee Bell Douglas.
Mary Ann is survived by her children, Norma Capone (Bill), Joe Herring (Sarah), Marvin Herring, Dawn Gunther, Julie Davidson (Kim), Richard Hay (Linda), and Elizabeth Hay; 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; sister Evelyn Long and sisters-in-law Jean Douglas and Peach Douglass. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband Bill Hay, brothers Harold (Jennie), Leslie (Bernice and Sandy), Marion (Barbara), Wallace, and Tommy (Carole); sister Sara Wells (Osborne); brother-in-law Ray Long, and grandson Robbie Herring.
After graduating Valedictorian of her high school, Mary Ann became a first class legal secretary for a high profile firm in Florida. When she met and married Bill Hay, the love of her life, she moved to Texas where they spent the majority of their lives together. While they grew a successful business in Houston, Mary Ann was a proud trailblazer of a ‘Woman Owned’ business. As a real estate investor, she purchased, renovated and managed numerous properties. She was well known for her volunteer work as administrator of her Presbyterian church, political elections judge, and The Houston Junior Women’s Club. She was also a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mary Ann traveled extensively, but was most at home being a second mother to her beloved grandsons. She cherished family time. She was fun-loving, kind, adventurous, and known for putting others before herself. There were so many lives touched by Mary Ann Hay, for she never hesitated to help family, friends, and so many strangers who walked in her path.
A funeral service is to be conducted at twelve o’clock noon on Saturday, the 27th of April in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. Immediately following all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
The interment will follow, via escorted cortege, at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
