COLUMBIA - A Mass of Christian Burial for SFC Manuel “Al” Martinez Alonzo, U.S. Army (Ret.), 82, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Monsignor Richard D. Harris officiating. Burial will follow the service at 1:00 p.m. in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel with visitation following until 8 p.m. Al passed away Thursday, June 11, 2015. Born in San Antonio, Texas, he was a son of Manuel Alonzo and Leonarda Martinez. He was a retired SFC with the U.S. Army serving in both the Korean Conflict and two tours during the Vietnam War later receiving the Bronze Star for his service. Following his retirement he became a supervisor in outpatient records at Moncrief Army Community Hospital, Fort Jackson. Following his second retirement from MACH he again went to work as a civil servant for Fort Jackson. Al and his wife have been members of St. Joseph Catholic Church for over 20 years. Surviving are his wife, Reneé Alonzo; son, Paul Maldonado of Fargo, N.D.; daughter, Carmen Sanders (Robert) of Columbia; sons, Rosario Maldonado (Sandra), Marcus Alonzo (fiancée PJ) both of Columbia; grandchildren, Christopher, Maria, Hannah, Rachel; great-grandson, Joey; and brother, Johnny Alonzo (Sylvia) of Corpus Christi, TX. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother and a sister.
