Columbia – They’re having a luncheon in Heaven and Lula Mae Jowers is the guest of honor! Lula Mae Sutton Jowers, 92, died Friday, February 14, 2014. Daughter of the late John D. and Norma Lee Sutton, Lula Mae was born in Columbia and attended Columbia High School and The University of South Carolina, where she was treasurer of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She married Lawrence Victor Jowers on December 18, 1942 and went with him to Atlanta while he attended medical school and then back to Columbia to live and raise her family.
LuLu, as Mrs. Jowers was affectionately called by most who knew her, was an active, enthusiastic mother of 4 and wife of a prominent physician. Her social calendar was always full! During her 92 years she was a member of Arsenal Hill Presbyterian Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, Circle Chairman and Moderator of the Women of the Church. She later joined Westminster Presbyterian Church where she continued to serve her church and her Lord. She was a Sunday school teacher, Deacon, circle chairman and led chapel for the preschoolers at Westminster Child Development Center. Lula Mae received the Honorary Life Membership from the Women of the Church of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Lula Mae was a charter member of the Daffodil Garden Club, President and Secretary of the Home Arts Club, a member of numerous luncheon clubs and worked with Boy Scouts.
An avid Gamecock, her blood truly ran garnet, and her love of Atlanta Braves baseball was legendary.
Lula Mae Jowers was predeceased by her beloved Lawrence and her precious son, Dr. Gregg Jowers. Also her grandson, Larry and great-grandsons, Caleb and James.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Jowers of Irmo; sons, Victor Jowers and wife, Sarah, of Camden; and Gerald Jowers and wife, Shirl, of Columbia; and daughter-in-law, Donna Jowers Wadford of Winnsboro. Her legacy is also carried on by 3 granddaughters, Robyn Wilcox and husband, Henry; Linsey Hyatt and husband, Bill, and Ashley Burt; 7 grandsons, Gregg Jowers and wife, Michelle, Jeff Jowers and wife, Lisa, Jerry Jowers and wife, Mary Frances, Jonathan Jowers and wife, Stephanie, Victor Burt, Eddie Deese, and Andrew Deese and wife, Mary Kay. She leaves behind 18 beloved great grandchildren – Jack and Lance Wilcox; Catherine Jowers, Camryn Jowers, Aislyn, Blythe and Kayla Reese Jowers; Hadessah, Nathan, Samuel and Karis Jowers; Daniel Vines; Matheson, Davis and Max Deese; and Hannah, Celia and Nicholson Deese.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, February 17, 2014 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with burial following in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church before the service starting at 1:30 p.m. Bring your sparkle to the service – Lula Mae didn’t own anything black!

Lula Mae’s death leaves this earth a little less bright but the stars in Heaven will sparkle more brilliantly as she wings her way through the heavenly halls with sequins, diamonds and glitter!
