COLUMBIA - Lillian Hair Jervey, was born in her home on the corner of Laurens and Senate Streets in Columbia, SC on December 26, 1922, and went to be with her LORD and Savior on Friday, April 27, 2018 at 95 years young. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Harrison Beacham Hair and Myrtle Pearce Hair and was the wife of the late Dr. Harold Edward Jervey Jr. for 56 years.
Lil loved the Lord Jesus Christ and besides her daily devotions, she taught Bible studies for years. She attended public schools in Columbia and was the first female Mayor of Hand Junior High. Lil’s senior year at Columbia High School she was chosen Prom Queen. She went to the University of South Carolina where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. At Trinity Cathedral she was a member of the Vestry, a Lay Reader, chaired the Evangelism and Spirituality committee, on the Board of Governors of the Holy Cross, and a member of the Altar Guild. She was active in Town Theater, a charter member of the Camellia Ball, a member of the Dianthus Garden Club for over 60 years and a member of Forest Lake Country Club Ladies Golf Association where she was an accomplished golfer and made 3 “hole in ones”.
In the front of her well-used Bible she had written one of her most treasured passages. It was Psalm 119:105, “Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path”. And she had marked a special passage from 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” Because of her strong faith, others described her as radiating the light of Christ. She loved life, never met a stranger and was fun and crazy.
After her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her greatest love and accomplishment was her family. She always said she loved children and told Harold that she could not marry him unless he wanted many children too. And the LORD blessed them with seven children, fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren with two still on the way. She never ceased to find delight and joy in all of them!
